HOW ORALUCENT WORKS
There are numerous scientific studies showing that certain wavelengths of visible blue light are effective at accelerating whitening as well as reducing the pathogenic bacteria associated with common dental problems. Red light has been shown to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing in the body. Therapeutic light delivered through a toothbrush head is able to travel into tight spaces, between teeth and even under the gum line, delivering more benefits than traditional toothbrushes. See our technology page for more details.
After extensive scientific research and development, Oralucent has zeroed in on the red and blue wavelengths with the highest degree of efficacy. So, while there are other devices using red and blue light, Oralucent is the one that hits that sweet spot.
In addition, only Oralucent has combined study-backed light wavelengths with patented eye comfort technology to achieve optimal therapeutic intensity while ensuring eye comfort. Blue light’s ability to selectively kill harmful bacteria while accelerating whitening and freshening breath takes oral care to a whole new level.
The blue light provides mild whitening even when used on its own. The light is absorbed by dark pigments and stains that have settled into your porous tooth structure. These pigments are receptive to bleaching as chemical bonds are broken by the resonating wavelength of light. When this specific type of light is combined with a peroxide toothpaste or gel, it acts as an accelerant, amplifying the whitening effects AND the germ-killing action.
The number of shades will vary depending on a variety of factors (you’ll find an entire article about this topic in our learning center.) The length of time it takes to see noticeable results will vary as well, based on where you’re starting and where you hope to end up. If you use the brush as recommended (2 minutes twice a day), you can expect to see results within 10 days. To help you track your changes, we developed a teeth whitening calculator.
Yes, the blue light in the Oralucent toothbrush will indeed provide an excellent way to maintain, on a daily basis, the results you experience with professional teeth whitening.
No. In fact, blue light and red light have been shown to REDUCE teeth dentin hypersensitivity and improve gum health.
Yes, visible spectrum light technology is safe and natural. Oralucent exceeds all applicable regulatory photobiological safety standards. Blue light at the intensity levels backed by scientific studies, however, can certainly cause annoying discomfort to the eyes. That’s why we built in our unique Eye Comfort TM patented technology – the light comes on and stays on only when it’s in your mouth. Customer comfort and satisfaction, along with safety and efficacy, are our top priorities.
Studies demonstrate that the type of blue light used in Oralucent selectively destroys the specific bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds, or VSCs. VSCs are considered the root cause of bad breath, so using Oralucent can help eliminate the very source of the problem, instead of just masking it temporarily width chewing gums and breath sprays. As an added benefit, reducing the undesirable bacteria allows the beneficial bacteria to thrive, fostering a balanced microbiome. This is a different approach than simply wiping out all bacteria, as mouthwashes do, which gives opportunistic bacteria the upper hand in repopulating.
The American Dental Association recommends two minutes of brushing twice a day at a minimum. The same is true for Oralucent, though our brush will continue up to a 4-minute maximum per brushing session to encourage longer brushing and even greater benefits. If you have an area requiring greater care, you may want to spend a little more time concentrating the light there.
Yes! You can use your favorite toothpaste. Using a toothpaste containing peroxide, however, will boost the whitening and brightening effects even more because it works synergistically with the blue light, which acts as an accelerant.
Please note that using black toothpastes containing charcoal, however, will block the light and diminish its effects.
You don’t have to use a peroxide toothpaste or gel. You will still experience benefits with the Oralucent toothbrush on its own, though whitening effects are increased by adding peroxide while brushing. You may use your favorite toothpaste or no other products at all - the choice is entirely yours.
Yes. In this case, we recommend you brush without a peroxide product. You’ll still get all the germ-killing and gum-soothing benefits of the red and blue light.
Yes. Blue light is very effective in killing the germs that cause bad breath as well as other germs that can lead to gum disease. If you want to limit the whitening effects, just use a non-peroxide toothpaste.
The same blue light emitted by the Oralucent brush has been shown to kill bacteria and fungi associated with these conditions: gingivitis, plaque and tartar, gum disease and periodontitis, bleeding gums, receding gums, dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, and bad breath/halitosis. You’ll find more details on these subjects in our learning center.
No, though it can help prevent cavities.
If you have any doubts about whether Oralucent is right for you, please speak with your dentist or doctor.
Speak with your dentist or doctor prior to using (the device) if you have any medical questions regarding the use of this product. Do not use if your skin is light sensitive or you are taking medication that may cause sensitivity to light. Doing so may result in a photosensitive reaction.
We did a lot of research and development to find the perfect balance between comfort and effectiveness. We settled on the soft bristles because intense vibration and aggressive brushing can damage delicate gum tissue and enamel. We want to make the brushing experience pleasurable, all while leaving you with a fresh-from-the-dentist clean feeling. We offer a gentle yet thorough new approach to cleaning delicate gum tissues and enamel by harnessing the power of the light to do the work rather than stiff bristles that can wear away enamel.
No, you can use Oralucent in manual mode alone or you may choose to add sonic motor action with a press of the button, depending on your preference or mood.
Simply lift the brush to wake it. You will know the lights are ready for use when the purple ring around the ON button is glowing. Simply press the ON button to add sonic motor action, if desired. Begin brushing and the blue and red lights will begin ramping up in intensity. If you would like to increase the gentle speed default setting, simply press the ON button and hold down for 3 seconds. The speed ramp will begin looping. Release the button to lock in your desired speed. You can change the level anytime by following the same steps.
Yes, we definitely recommend the Oralucent toothbrush for people who wear braces. Not only is it an effective and efficient way to remove food debris, but the blue light is able to get into places that no traditional toothbrush can, around and under brackets and in between teeth. It can reduce bacteria that cause plaque, preventing it from accumulating.
Red light has been shown to stimulate circulation and reduce inflammation in the body, which is particularly beneficial for delicate gum tissue.
We stand behind our toothbrush with our Shine Guarantee. You love your brighter smile or your money back, no questions asked. See our full policy for details.
The FDA does not approve toothbrushes. However, Oralucent is a Class 1 Medical Device and has been registered with the FDA.
Yes, the Oralucent toothbrush holds a number of US and International patents for its technology. These include US9198502B2, US9439503B2, EP3076825B1, BR132017000369E8 and several additional patents pending encompassing eye comfort, control software, IoT integration, and proprietary light emission designs for manual and power toothbrushes.
Yes! There is a large and growing body of research on the medical benefits of light therapy. It has been found effective in numerous studies in the field of dental medicine for both antimicrobial purposes as well as whitening. Please visit our technology page where you can find a lot more information.
The mouth is considered the gateway to the body, as more and more studies are proving. It’s extremely important to keep the oral microbiome balanced for overall health and wellbeing. Harmful microbes contain an iron-based porphyrin pigment which is metabolized from human blood. For this reason, only infectious bacteria (aka “vampire bugs”) that attack human tissues are affected by the blue light, whereas harmless and benevolent bacteria are unaffected. According to recent microbiology research, less than 1% of bacteria species are considered harmful. Click here for more information
